Disinformation Campaign Makes Headlines
Media industry sources say although they cannot identify the specific target of an emerging disinformation campaign now making headlines online, in print, and on broadcast media around the world, the clear message that can be taken from the obfuscating incident is that in a civilisation with advanced communications technologies and a sophisticated culture of semiotic manipulation, empty noise remains a most effective weapon against the dissemination of undesirable truths.
While the intended purpose of the rumoured PR heist remains, like its origins and its intended victiims, unknown, recognising phony press releases and fallacious leads that might form part of the campaign is virtually impossible. Most major news networks have elected to continue broadcasting despite the new challenge to the rich and varied content produced by the manufacturers of Western news and current affairs. But it is estimated that the strategy of displacing meaningful material from webpages, newspapers, and screens through the generation and dissemination of facile, momentless babble could be with us for some time - a period of months, at least, and may seriously inhibit clear perception of objective universal truth for years or decades to come.
'It's the Long War,' said Orinoco Vernacular of Suitable Conversions, a shadowy multinational PR company that is the front for an even shadowier and more multinational PR company that has decided to go public with the industry rumours a major disinformation campaign was planned. 'We're not sure where the disinformation is coming from, what it's about, or what it's supposed to achieve, for whom, at whose expense, how, or why,' says Vernacular, chagrined. ' We're completely in the dark. But we knew it was the right thing to warn the media - and the public - someone was attempting this sort of grand, empty, global delusion, even though we don't really know very much more than that fact ourselves.'
In the meantime, valued Reader - our pledge to you: that this publication and others will continue to convey diligently to you, the Reader, at home, or at work - Joe Public - Joe Citizen - the import of the many important messages we've received in recent hours warning us in a timely fashion of this dangerous threat to the already threadbare credibility of the global media. Stand with us through this crisis and we may learn together - at this time of greatest peril - what it is press freedom really means.
